Genius, I tell you!

I’m fairly certain my friend Michelle is a culinary genius. So maybe she doesn’t create amazing meals straight out of Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking, but she could write her own cookbook entitled Mastering the Art of Lazy Cooking.

Yes, I said lazy.

Don’t get me wrong (or punch me, Michelle), I don’t mean lazy in a bad way. I’m lazy. I want to waste as little time as possible on stuff. I want to do things in as few a steps as possible. If I’m going to walk up the stairs with a load of laundry in my arms, I don’t want to make two trips. If I’m going to change one baby, I’m going to change all of my diapered kids. If I’m going to get sweaty when I work out, I might as well get super duper sweaty.

Hm, maybe not the same. Anyway, you get my point.

Essentially, my always funky-shirted college professor would be oh-so proud of me for thinking Lean Manufacturing and remembering ever-so-well reading The Jungle while we were learning about the early years of manufacturing. (What do you think Prof. Plumlee? Super proud?)

Okay, so what does this have to do with Michelle’s culinary prowess?

She taught me an amazing trick.

First, make french toast. Make a lot of french toast. Use up your entire loaf of bread making french toast, in fact.

“That’s a waste!” You say.

No, no my friend, it is not.

You see, after you have filled your family’s belly, you place the french toast on cookie sheets in a single layer. Stack the cookie sheets and place them in the freezer. Once the french toast is frozen, take the cookie sheets out and transfer the toast to gallon Ziploc bags.

On the mornings where you’re tempted to feed your kids cold pizza (I would never do that), take a piece of toast from the freezer, pop it in the toaster and voila! French toast.

This works with pancakes and waffles too!

Oh, and if that weren’t genius enough, she also pre-makes burritos and freezes them, so all you have to do is pop them in the microwave for lunch. So much healthier than those store bought ones, and way cheaper too.

So, not only is it lazy cooking, it’s frugal cooking.

Genius, I tell you, genius!

Anyone have any of their own time-saving tricks? Please share!
