I was desperate…

I did something to my babies last night that I would’ve never thought I would do; something that I am 100% positive they will hate me for later in life.

You see, my babies have been waking up in the middle of the night. Desperate for a full-night’s sleep, I began running through my mind potential reasons why they might be waking up.

Like any mother of a non-sleeping baby (or two), I made a mental mommy checklist:

  • Hungry? Sure, hunger is always a potential reason, but that didn’t seem to be the case.
  • Chilly? Definitely possible. I made sure I was dressing them warm enough and tucking them in tightly.
  • Diaper issues? Ohhhh.

That seemed to have been the common thread through each night. They were always waking up with very wet diapers. So wet, in fact, they soaked through their warm jammies, their blankets, and their sheets.

Of course, I didn’t come to this revelation until I was putting them to bed last night and was completely exhausted myself. Too tired to head to the store for a larger size or overnight diapers, I tried coming up with other ideas.

The mommy checklist started up again:

  • Towel? Naah, that wouldn’t fit very well in the diaper. (Though, it did bring back super funny memories of going to the hospital after my water broke with the twins, an enormous wadded up towel in my pants. Sex-ay!)
  • Washcloth? Not going to be absorbent enough. Wait. Absorbent…
  • Maxi pad? Ohhhhh!

Ya know those uber sexy overnight pads that reach from well above your butt crack to almost to your belly button?

Oh yes. I did.

It was as if those pads were meant to fit inside a diaper! The wings tucked perfectly underneath the leak-proof sides of the diaper. The pad was almost perfectly the length of the entire diaper. I giggled a little (and by a little, I mean a lot) as I fastened the diaper tabs and bundled the boys in their jammies.

“They’re gonna kill me!” I chuckled to myself.

Guess what?!

It totally…

didn’t work at all.

Nope.

They still woke up, soaked as ever.

The funniest part of this story? I thought I was being pretty clever, putting pads in my kids’ diapers. I mentioned to a group of mom friends about my not-so-genius idea, expecting them to laugh at me or shake their heads.

One friend said, “Oh yeah, I’ve totally done that!”

Other friends nodded in agreement.

Another friend leaned forward and began explaining how she would dissect the maxi pads and that the trick to getting maximum absorption is to cut off the sticky plastic-y bottom part, because that keeps it all from going into the diaper and offering more pee soakage.

Who knew?
